Paleochora

The Nymph of the Lybian Sea

Paleochora is located on the South West Coast of Crete, about 70 kms from Chania. It is built on a small peninsula between two bays and is lapped by the Libyan Sea – sometimes appropriately called “The Nymph of the Lybian Sea”.

There are approximately 3.000 inhabitants all year round, increasing in the tourist season. There is an excellent variety of tourist accommodation, ranging from simple rooms to hotels. It’s a place you will never bored of and its prices are suitable for every pocket! And … in the meantime enjoying our wonderful climate.

The village caters to the needs of all its visitors. Services provided includes: Banks, doctors, dentists, chemists, police, post office, cinema, gymnasium, car rental, taxi service, scuba diving, boat trips, trekking, clubs, music bars, disco, cafes and much much more!

We have quite possibly the best beaches in Crete (with lifeguards) and a separate nudist beach.

Paleochora is the ideal base for visiting all the surrounding areas. You can visit archeological sites such as Lissos, historical sites including Byzantine churches and monasteries, museums, gorges such as the famous Samaria Gorge and the Agia Irini Gorge. Also the beaches at Elafonissi, Falasarna and Balos.

There are Ferries leaving every morning for Sougia, Agia Roumeli, Loutro, Hora Sfakion and Elafonissi and a little less frequently Gavdos.

Furthermore, every afternoon, weather permitting you can go on dolphin and whale spotting trips, all enhanced by magnificent sunsets.

For those lovers of walking there are many European footpaths E4 + E1 – some taking you to villages others ending to one or another beautiful beach.

In the evening after an energetic (or not!) day, you can enjoy a wander through the central or seaside streets and enjoy your dinner at one of the many restaurants. Follow that with a coffee and maybe local ice-cream or a delicious pastry at one of the excellent cafes. The main street and stony beach promenade are closed to traffic in the evening, thus making it all more enjoyable.

Taking all this into account, Paleochora is a corner of Greece where the holiday maker does not became the object of tourist exploitation and can enjoy Cretan hospitality in a peaceful and relaxed environment. It offers a great holiday for all age groups.
